The video below highlights the differences between those two dates. As you can see, ice has grown in nearly every direction since last summer - with a large increase in the area north of Siberia. Also note that the area around the Northwest Passage (west of Greenland) has seen a significant increase in ice. Some of the islands in the Canadian Archipelago are surrounded by more ice than they were during the summer of 1980.

The Arctic did not experience the meltdowns forecast by NSIDC and the Norwegian Polar Year Secretariat. It didn't even come close. Additionally, some current graphs and press releases from NSIDC seem less than conservative. There appears to be a consistent pattern of overstatement related to Arctic ice loss.
We know that Arctic summer ice extent is largely determined by variable oceanic and atmospheric currents such as the Arctic Oscillation. NASA claimed last summer that "not all the large changes seen in Arctic climate in recent years are a result of long-term trends associated with global warming". The media tendency to knee-jerkingly blame everything on "global warming" makes for an easy story - but it is not based on solid science.

Oh no! The Arctic ice cap grew by 30% this last year. At this current rate of expansion, the whole world will be completely covered in ice by the year 2023.
Unless of course, this is just another short-term cyclical trend, like all the other ups and downs in the world temperature readings. Back in the 70's, scientists agreed that we were heading into another ice age (as a ploy to demand more money for "research"). In the 90's until today, scientists have agreed that the world is melting (as an equally transparent ploy to demand more money for "research").
Now that it's becoming more and more obvious every day that the whole Global Warming thing was a cruel and evil hoax perpetuated by people who really didn't care at all about our future, it will be that much harder for them to profit from said hoax. Don't hold your breath for Al Gore to win any more accolades for "An Inconvenient Truth Part II" when he decides to cook up more fake facts and call up Michael Moore.
Exactly how cold will it have to get before Al Gore and all those millions of scientists with their "inarguable proof" finally stop trying to push this charade?
And if you're expecting some sort of apology from them for causing undue alarm - don't hold your breath. The scientific consensus crowd from the 70's still haven't apologized for telling us we were headed into another ice age.
Global Warming is, and always has been, about money and control. They are trying to destroy manufacturing jobs in the West and move them to China and India. That's where the money leads. Supposedly, China and India would also have to reduce their carbon emissions eventually, but by the time it's their turn, there will be nobody powerful enough to force them to do it. America will have collapsed under the weight of these draconian rules designed to "save the planet".
Real world temperatures have been dropping since 1998 (the hottest year recently). But just because it has been over for 10 years, don't expect any of these fools to admit they are wrong. They will cling blindly to the belief that the world is melting. And they think they are right, having earned phD's from the Chicken Little Drama Queen University.
You know the worst part about having been right all along? Having to spend all those years where everyone thought I was the idiot. It's called science. It's called logic. Real science and real logic never supported Global Warming. This was a hoax from the beginning. And I'm sure 10 years from now, there will still be a few dullards trying to find ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
For some people, there is no amount of proof that will convince them of the truth.
